Hong Kong Neon Limited Edition Artwork
HKD$11,040
Description
Louise Hill: For this print I have included not only the iconic HK neon signage but many other images - some old, some new, of street furniture, food carts, fabrics, little pieces of haberdashery from Sham Shui Po, my friend's beautiful tattoo and one of my son's T-shirts! All of the images I have either shot on the street or are photos of vintage props from my private collection. All of my images are meticulously intertwined to create an artwork made from a riot of vibrant colour, to convey the urban edginess of 'Hip Hong Kong'.
Hong Kong's neon signage gained it's fame in the 70's and soon became the symbol of this fast paced city. I recently discovered that these lovingly handcrafted signs were being taken down or replaced with characterless LED versions of their former glorious selves.
So I jumped on a plane and walked the streets in that lovely 'blue hour' to capture them. Included are some famous icons like Sammy's Kitchen (Cow) and Mak Man Kee (central/noodle bowls) a Michelin starred restaurant famous since 1958 for it's wonton and duck egg noodles - both have now sadly gone... Also featuring are the prominent neon signs from Tsui Wah and Yung Kee restaurants, much loved HK institutions which are hopefully still there and being restored.
Hong Kong is very much a vertical city and as Hong Kongers like to say 'you have to remember to look up'!
